A black screen on PlayStation 5 does not automatically mean the console is dead. The fault can be the HDMI cable, TV input, a receiver, soundbar or capture card between console and display, resolution/HDCP/4K 120 Hz settings, software state, the HDMI port itself or the HDMI circuit on the main board.

Stop early if the HDMI port is loose, bent, missing pins, smells burnt, has been exposed to liquid or the console was dropped with the cable connected. Do not twist the cable to make the picture appear. That can make the port and solder joints worse. Bring the PS5 to EasyPC for a free diagnosis before more testing.

1. Start with a simple HDMI test

Use the HDMI cable that came with the PS5 if possible, or another cable you know works. Confirm the TV is on the correct HDMI input, try another HDMI port on the TV, and connect the PS5 directly to the TV or monitor without a soundbar, receiver, splitter, adapter or capture card in between.

Then test the PS5 on another TV or monitor. If the picture works there, the fault is probably the TV input, cable, intermediate device or TV setting. If the console shows a white light but has no image on any display with a known good cable, the fault points more toward the HDMI port, video output or main board.

2. Power everything off and remove intermediate devices

Turn off both the PS5 and the display, unplug the power cables, wait about 20 minutes, and reconnect with direct HDMI. If the picture returns, update the TV firmware and check the TV menu for the right HDMI mode on the port you use. Many TVs require an enhanced HDMI mode for 4K 120 Hz.

3. Use Safe Mode without deleting data

To start Safe Mode: turn the PS5 fully off by holding the power button for about 3 seconds. Then hold the power button again and release it after the second beep, usually about 7 seconds later. Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.

Start with Change Video Output. Choose Change Resolution to force a lower resolution if the TV does not handle the signal. If the screen is blank because of an HDCP handshake issue, try Change HDCP Mode. These choices are intended for display problems and should not delete games or saved data.

Sony also lists Repair Console Storage as a Safe Mode option that does not erase data, and Clear Cache and Rebuild Database for system feature and database issues. These are not HDMI port repair, but they can be safer to try than reset if the console reaches Safe Mode. Read the menu text carefully before choosing anything.

Do not choose Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) unless you have a backup and understand the consequence. These choices delete user data, and reinstalling also deletes the system software. If you are unsure, stop here and bring the console to EasyPC for a free diagnosis.

4. When the picture comes back

Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Check Current Video Output Signal, set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p if the TV supports it, and test one change at a time if the image flickers or disappears.

For black screen, flickering or unstable video with 4K, 120 Hz, HDR or VRR: try Video Transfer Rate at -1 or -2, turn off 120 Hz/VRR/HDR temporarily, and re-enable them one at a time. For 4K 120 Hz, use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, connect directly to the TV and use the correct HDMI 2.1 port with the right port setting.

5. Signs of a damaged HDMI port

Typical signs are a loose, crooked or broken port, visible damaged pins, or a picture that only appears when the cable is held at a specific angle. Do not force the cable in, and do not leave it hanging at an angle for a temporary picture. That can tear more solder joints loose.

The PS5 HDMI port is soldered to the main board. A proper repair is not only about replacing the socket, but also checking the solder joints, HDMI filters, HDMI circuit and possible board traces. If the PS5 has no image on several displays with a working cable, it should be diagnosed before you buy parts.

6. When should you bring the PS5 in?

Bring it in for a free diagnosis if Safe Mode never appears, the HDMI port is physically damaged, the console was dropped or exposed to liquid, the picture comes and goes, or it has other symptoms such as unusual fan noise, power loss or smell. We can separate cable, port, HDMI circuit, power supply and main board faults before recommending repair.
