Email setup often fails because the password, security settings or server settings are wrong. Do not rely on old guides with fixed port numbers without checking the provider’s current settings.
Online.no addresses can also fail partially: you may receive email but not send, or the account may keep asking for the password. This is often solved by checking the settings, removing the account from the mail app and adding it again.
Where you find the account varies by mail app. In Outlook it is often under File and Accounts, while other apps use Settings, Tools or Accounts. Before deleting an old account, check whether it is POP or IMAP so you do not remove locally stored mail without a backup.
IMAP and SMTP must be correct
IMAP is normally used to receive and sync email, while SMTP is used for sending. An SMTP problem can let you receive email but stop outgoing messages.
Telenor currently lists mail.online.no as both incoming and outgoing server for Online email. IMAP uses port 993 with SSL. SMTP uses port 465 with SSL, or 587 with SSL/TLS. The username is the part before @online.no, maximum 8 characters.
If you have an older setup with imap.online.no and smtp.online.no, it may still work, but during troubleshooting you should compare it with Telenor’s updated settings.
Password and security
If the account uses two-factor security or app passwords, the normal account password may not work inside an email app. Also check whether the account is locked after too many failed sign-ins.
If you do not remember the Online email password, it usually needs to be changed through Telenor ID or Telenor’s account pages. Test webmail login first; if webmail does not work, the account or password needs to be fixed before the mail app can be configured.
POP or IMAP
Choose IMAP if you want email synced between PC, Mac, mobile and webmail. POP often stores email locally on one machine and can make migration and backup harder. If an old account is configured as POP, local email should be backed up before removing the account.
