Flexgate is a common name for display issues where a cable or display module fails as the lid is opened and closed. Typical symptoms include a display that turns off at certain angles, flickering or uneven light at the bottom of the screen.
The issue is especially associated with MacBook Pro models from 2016-2018, including the A1706, A1707 and A1708 model families. The cable between the logic board and display is stressed every time the lid opens and closes, and over time the backlight or image can fail.
Not every display fault is Flexgate
Similar symptoms can also come from a cracked panel, liquid damage, backlight faults or logic board issues. The model and symptom must be checked before deciding whether cable repair or display replacement is right.
A useful test is whether the image changes when the lid is moved carefully. If the display works when almost closed but turns off when opened further, that points toward the cable or display module. If an external monitor works normally, the logic board and graphics are often less likely, but the machine should still be diagnosed.
Check possible Apple coverage first
Apple has previously had a service programme for certain 2016 13-inch MacBook Pro models with backlight faults. Before booking a paid repair, the model, serial number and any possible Apple coverage should be checked. If the machine is not covered, we can assess whether display replacement or a more targeted cable repair makes the most sense.
When repair makes sense
If the MacBook otherwise works well, display or cable repair can be worth it. If the battery, keyboard and logic board also have faults, the total value should be assessed first.
Bring the model number, serial number or the machine itself. We can check whether the fault looks like Flexgate, whether the display must be replaced, or whether a more targeted cable repair is possible.
